Route

    Lisbon District

  2. 2

Park and National Palace of Pena

The fantastic Palácio da Pena is one of the best examples of 19th-century Romantic revivalism in Portugal. Situated at the top of the Monte da Pena, the palace was built on the site of an old monastery belonging to the Order of St. Jerome. It was the fruit of the imagination of Dom Fernando of Saxe Coburg-Gotha, who married the queen Dona Maria II in 1836. After falling in love with Sintra, he decided to buy the convent and the surrounding land to build a summer palace for the royal family. The king consort adopted Portuguese architectural and decorative forms for the palace, which he built according to the revivalist taste (neo-Gothic, neo-Manueline, neo-Islamic, neo-Renaissance), and, in the surrounding area, he decided to make a magnificent woodland park in the English style, with a wide variety of exotic tree species.

  3. 3

    Centro Historico de Sintra

A beautiful town at the foot of the mountain range of the same name, its unique characteristics have led UNESCO to classify it as a World heritage site. It was even necessary to create a special category for the purpose – that of “cultural landscape” – taking into account its natural riches as well as the historic buildings in the town and mountains. Endowed with luxuriant vegetation, the mountains are part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

  4. 4

    Parque e Palacio de Monserrate

An hidden gem of Sintra, Monserrate Palace in Sintra is a Romanticist masterpiece. Built in 1540 as a chapel, it was transformed in 1790 into a neo-Gothic house. Its golden age began in 1856 when English millionaire Sir Francis Cook built the current palace, blending Gothic, Indian, and Moorish styles. Surrounded by a botanical garden with 3,000 exotic species, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Today, it stands as one of Portugal’s most eclectic and beautiful examples of 19th-century art.
