Discover the Medieval Kingdom of Northumbria: explore the ruined castles, quaint villages, and wild coastline of North-East England on this day trip from Edinburgh.
Holy Island & Alnwick Castle Day Trip
On the morning of your activity, after meeting in Edinburgh city centre, you'll board a luxury coach and head south into northeast England, taking the scenic coastal route for views of the rugged landscape.
Your first stop will be Holy Island, with a history dating back to the 6th century. Connected to Lindisfarne by a tidal causeway, it has been a pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages. You can explore the ruins of the Priory, the ancient Castle, and sample the famous mead brewed by monks.
Next, you'll head to Alnwick, a lively market town and home to the 11th-century Alnwick Castle. Here, you can stroll around the town center or explore the castle complex and its gardens, including the Grand Cascade, a filming location for Harry Potter.
Later, you will cross the River Tweed into the historic town of Coldstream, lying on the English-Scottish border. If time permits, there will be a stop at Flodden Field, the site of the 1513 battle that resulted in the death of James IV, King of Scots.
At the end of the day, you'll return to Edinburgh, arriving around 6:15 pm.
