The Sasso Barisano and the Sasso Caveoso are the districts of the historic centre of Matera. This guided tour of the Sassi will showcase the houses and churches carved into the rock.

Sassi de Matera Guided Tour

We will meet at the designated time in Piazza Pascoli to begin this journey into Matera's past, with an introduction to its history and architecture.

Next, we will head to Civita, the highest point of the Sassi of Matera, observing iconic monuments such as the baroque churches of Purgatorio and San Francesco d'Assisi along the way.

We will stroll through Via delle Beccherie, a former shopping street, before reaching Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where a 19th-century fountain built by King Ferdinand II and a panoramic view of the Sasso Barisano await.

In Sasso Barisano, we will explore an underground hypogeum and a cave house to learn about the peasants' lives until the 1950s. We will also visit a handicraft workshop featuring items made of tuff.

Following this, we will walk to Sasso Caveoso and visit one of its rock-hewn cave churches from the Italo-Greek period, housing icons from the 10th to 13th centuries.

Before concluding the tour, we will enjoy a tasting of typical products of Matera, which will vary by season.

The tour will last approximately three hours.
