Tour Overview
At the appointed time, we will gather at the Plaza de la Catedral, situated right in front of Almería’s remarkable fortress-style cathedral, constructed in the 16th century, designed with towers and sturdy walls to thwart Berber pirate incursions. From this point, we will embark on a walking adventure to uncover the city's most notable sites.
The journey will commence with a visit to the adjacent Convent of the Purísima Concepción. We will then wander by the Poet's House, a museum honoring writer José Ángel Valente, and the delightful Plaza Campoamor, renowned for its stunning bougainvillea trees.
Continuing onward, we will navigate Calle de la Reina, one of the city’s most ancient thoroughfares, before moving to Calle Descanso, where the narrow, meandering paths capture the spirit of Almería's Moorish history. This will lead us to the entrance of the Alcazaba, and we will stroll along Calle Almanzor, named after the famed Muslim leader, admiring the incredible fortress from the 10th century, which stands as the largest Islamic construction in Spain.
As we return to the heart of the city, we will pass through Plaza Vieja, where Almería's Town Hall is located, and then proceed to the Convent of the Poor Clares. Our next stop will be the vibrant Plaza de las Flores, where the John Lennon statue serves as a unique homage to the musician's time in this locale.
We will continue to the Church of Santiago, celebrated for its exquisite Plateresque facade and striking 50-meter (164-foot) tall tower, followed by a visit to the Spanish Civil War shelters, where we will delve into a pivotal chapter of the city’s more recent narrative.
This 1.5 to 2-hour journey will conclude at Puerta de Purchena, one of the key focal points in Almería, as we reflect on the city's rich history, vibrant culture, and most significant landmarks.
