Delve into the volcanic depths of Terceira and discover its geological formations. Explore the natural heritage of the Azores: the volcanic caves of Algar do Carvão, Gruta do Natal, and the fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre.
Volcanic Caves Day Trip
Pickup will be from your hotel at the specified time, initiating the route to the volcanic caves of Terceira via an off-roading vehicle or van. The journey travels through leafy forests and fields of hydrangeas.
Venturing through lesser-traveled trails, we will reach the Guilherme Moniz crater, 640 meters high. Here, visitors can see significant geological features, notably Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal. The tour will explore these volcanic caves and the unique Azorian vegetation inside, including holly, moss, and laurel.
Learn about the history of these caves while admiring stalactites and cavities on the surface, culminating at a hidden pond that enhances the experience.
The tour continues to Furnas do Enxofre, known for its geothermal activity, where fumaroles emit sulphurous steam, showcasing the volcanic origins of the Azores.
On the return trip, the vehicle will travel along the main roads of the island, offering scenic views of Terceira. After approximately four hours immersed in nature, we will return to the hotel.
