Delve into the volcanic depths of Terceira and discover its geological formations, including the volcanic caves of Algar do Carvão, Gruta do Natal, and the fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre.

Volcanic Caves Day Trip

Pickup will be from your hotel, followed by a journey to the volcanic caves of Terceira in an off-roading vehicle or van. The route features leafy forests and hydrangea fields.

Traveling along less frequented trails, we will reach the 640-meter high Guilherme Moniz crater. Here, we will explore the Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal, examining their interiors and the vegetation inside, which includes holly, moss, and laurel.

While learning about the caves' history, we will observe the stalactites and cavities, including a hidden pond that adds an enchanting element to the experience.

Next, we will visit the Furnas do Enxofre, known for its geothermal activity, where fumaroles emit sulphurous steam. This observation highlights the Azores' volcanic origins.

During the return journey, we will pass through the island's main roads to take in the scenery of Terceira. After 4 hours in nature, we will return to the hotel.

Itinerary Adjustments

Due to maintenance works, the Algar do Carvão is currently closed. The itinerary will be adjusted to include a visit to a hidden lava tube.
