On this 2-day trekking tour on the Acatenango volcano, we will ascend one of the highest peaks in Guatemala and camp in nature.
Description
Day 1: Antigua Guatemala - Acatenango Volcano
We will depart from downtown Antigua by minibus to La Soledad, located on the slopes of the Acatenango volcano, which stands at 3976 metres. The trek consists of four stages, each approximately one hour long.
As we hike, the landscape will change from agricultural fields to cloud forests with views of other highland volcanoes like Atitlán, Tolimán, and Tajamulco. Midway through, we will have a picnic with a chicken or vegetable burrito.
Upon reaching 3700 metres (12,129 ft), we will set up our tents and enjoy hot tea or coffee, followed by a dinner of pasta bolognese or a vegetarian option. We will rest for the night in the camp.
Day 2: Acatenango Volcano - Antigua Guatemala
We will wake up early to hike to the top of the Acatenango volcano, enjoying breathtaking views of the Guatemalan highlands. This route involves challenging paths of volcanic sand.
Participants may opt for an additional climb of the Fuego volcano, departing before 4 am. Note that this route is demanding and unguided, leading to the summit at 3900 metres (12,795 ft) for close-up views of eruptions.
After taking in the panoramic views, we will descend to base camp for breakfast of banana bread and coffee. Afterwards, we will return to La Soledad.
The tour concludes with our return to Antigua Guatemala, arriving between 12:30 and 1 pm.
