On this 2-day trekking tour on the Acatenango volcano, participants will reach the summit of one of the highest peaks in Guatemala and camp in nature.
Description
Day 1: Antigua Guatemala - Acatenango Volcano
Departure will be from downtown Antigua by minibus to the village of La Soledad, located on the mountainside of the Acatenango volcano, which is 3976 meters high.
The Acatenango volcano trekking route consists of four stages on the first day, each lasting approximately one hour. Hikers will experience diverse landscapes, transitioning from agricultural fields to cloud forests with views of other highland volcanoes like Atitlán and Tajamulco. A picnic of chicken or vegetable burrito will be provided halfway through the hike.
Upon reaching an altitude of 3700 meters (12,129 ft), tents will be set up, followed by tea or coffee and a dinner of pasta bolognese or vegetarian pasta. The next day will continue the adventure.
Day 2: Acatenango Volcano - Antigua Guatemala
Early in the morning, trekking will commence towards the top of the Acatenango volcano for breathtaking views of the Guatemalan highlands. Challenging paths of volcanic sand will be crossed. An optional climb of the Fuego volcano is available, starting before 4 am; this route is difficult and unguided but offers impressive eruptions.
After seeing the panoramic views, participants will descend to base camp for breakfast of banana bread and coffee, and then head back down to La Soledad, concluding at the departure point in Antigua between 12:30 and 1 pm.
