The free tour meets in the Grote Markt ("Great Market Square"), the town hall square - the perfect place to begin our journey into the riches and history of Flanders' largest and richest town. This square is a perfectly preserved demonstration of the city's 'golden era' in the sixteenth century - when the city was a place of immense riches and international importance, and has been called "the centre of the entire international economy" of the time.

The tour will lead you around the most emblematic monuments in the city, including Het Steen (the medieval fortress that once lent strength to the grand port so vital to the Antwerp economy), the St. Charles Borromeo Church (known for its decoration painted by Dutch master Rubens), and the Boerentoren (the "Farmer's Tower"; officially the KBC Tower and a symbol of the more modern side of Antwerp, as well as being one of Europe's first skyscrapers).

And you'll see the house of legendary artist Rubens, learning about his links with the city, as well as taking a trip back in time, wandering the Vlaeykensgang (almost untouched since the sixteenth century). And by the time the tour finishes, you'll feel right at home in the diamond capital of the world!

How does it work?

This tour is conducted on foot, making it an ideal opportunity to explore the heart of Antwerp. The meeting point is at the Grote Markt, and from there, the guide will take you on an engaging journey through the city’s highlights. Be prepared to walk for approximately 2 hours, and wear comfortable shoes.
