Arcos de la Frontera Walking Tour Itinerary
Arcos de la Frontera, once a small kingdom in Islamic Spain, is a hilltop village known for its white houses and Moorish architecture, part of the Pueblos Blancos of Andalusia. After meeting your guide on the steep cobbled streets, you'll start your guided walking tour of the historic centre.
Near the meeting point is the Puerta de Jerez, or Old Jerez Gate, remnants of the ancient Roman and Moorish city walls. From there, observe the Palacio del Conde del Águila, a 15th-century palace exemplifying late Gothic and Mudejar styles.
Your next stop is Plaza del Cabildo, the heart of historic Arcos. Here, admire the 17th-century stone entrance of the Old City Hall and the Medieval Castillo de Arcos, a military fortress from the Muslim era. The Plaza also features Arcos' Parador, a luxury hotel in a historic building, and the Balcón de la Peña Nueva, a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Andalusian countryside.
Continue exploring the town's history through its diverse architecture. You'll see the Iglesia de San Pedro, a church from the 15th-17th century built on a 14th-century Moorish watchtower, and the Basílica de Santa María de la Asunción, a Mudejar church influenced by Gothic, Plateresque, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The tour concludes at the Mirador de Abades, with views over the whitewashed houses and natural scenery of the Sierra de Grazalema and Los Alcornocales national parks.
