Learn all about the 1,000-year-old work of ashlar stone quarry workers and enter a ravine formed by flowing water on our unforgettable Ashlar Route & Culebrillas Canyon Tour from Arequipa.
Ashlar Route & Culebrillas Canyon Tour
Firstly, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Arequipa at your chosen time. We'll drive down the Uchumayo road until we reach the ashlar stone quarries. Here, we'll take a guided tour to learn about the work of the quarrymen, whose trade dates back to ancient times.
The stones in this area can only be worked by hand, as they would break otherwise. The quarrymen carve the stone to form the ashlars used for constructions typical of this part of Peru. This material originates from the lava of the volcanoes that surround Arequipa.
Afterwards, we'll spend 30 minutes walking to our next destination, the Culebrillas Canyon, a ravine formed by nature and the passage of water. We'll hike through the rocky walls that tower between 50 (15 metres) to 65 feet (20 metres). Additionally, we'll see the 1,000-year-old petroglyphs, with the meanings of these cave symbols remaining a mystery.
Following a fascinating 4-hour tour, we'll return to the centre of Arequipa and drop you off near the Plaza de Armas.
