Ashlar Route & Culebrillas Canyon Tour
We will pick you up from your hotel in Arequipa at your chosen time. We will drive down the Uchumayo road until we reach the ashlar stone quarries. Here, a guided tour will provide insights into the work of the quarrymen, whose trade dates back to ancient times.
The stones in this area can only be worked by hand, as they would break otherwise. Quarrymen carve the stone to form ashlars used for typical constructions in this part of Peru. This material comes from the lava of the volcanoes surrounding Arequipa.
Afterwards, we will spend 30 minutes walking to Culebrillas Canyon, a natural ravine. A hike through the rocky walls rising between 50 (15 metres) and 65 feet (20 metres) will be conducted, where we will also see 1,000-year-old petroglyphs. The meanings of these engraved cave symbols remain a mystery.
Following a 4-hour tour, we will return to the centre of Arequipa and drop you off near the Plaza de Armas.
