Embark on an exploration from Armenia to one of Colombia's key nature reserves by hiking through the Otún Quimbaya Sanctuary. This adventure will offer you a chance to connect with the stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity of this exceptional location.
Hiking in the Otún Quimbaya Sanctuary
Your journey begins with a pick-up from your accommodation in Armenia at 8 a.m., followed by a northward drive towards the Otún Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary.
After approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes on the road, we will reach the nature reserve located in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes. This sanctuary is committed to preserving a variety of species, including some that are threatened, ensuring their survival within its diverse ecosystems.
Upon arrival, we will set off on a 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) trek through the lush Andean rainforest. This moderately easy hike provides opportunities to observe various birds in their natural environment, including moustached antpittas, vibrantly colored tanagers, torrent ducks, and other species unique to the region.
Additionally, expect to encounter mammals such as monkeys, silver foxes, tapirs, and pacaranas. The sanctuary serves as a safe haven for these creatures, allowing them to thrive in their protected habitat.
During the hike, we will pause to rejuvenate with a local traditional lunch, which includes a main dish and a beverage. Following our meal, we will continue to explore and engage with the natural wonders surrounding us.
Finally, we will head back to Armenia, where you will be returned to your hotel by 3 p.m.
