This guided tour of Arouca will take us to the most important churches of this town, exploring its history and connections to the monarchies of Spain and Portugal.
Description
At your chosen time, we will meet at the entrance of the monastery of Arouca, the most significant church in the area. We will enjoy sweets and explore the monastery's rooms, including the cloister, kitchen, and museum of sacred art. The tour will highlight the history involving Mafalda of Portugal, the princess who significantly contributed to the founding of the monastery in the 13th century before becoming a nun.
The guided tour of Arouca will continue through the historic center to the Chapel of Mercy, constructed in 1612, notable for its paintings and religious sculptures.
Next, we will visit the Calvario de Arouca, a granite mountain featuring stone crosses. The history of this site, dedicated to reflection, along with discussions about the procession of the Fogaréus, will be covered.
The tour will conclude at the Calvary after a duration of 2.5 hours.
