This guided tour of Arouca will focus on the key churches of the town, exploring its history and connections with the monarchies of Spain and Portugal.
Description
We will meet at the entrance of the monastery of Arouca, the most significant church in the area. The tour includes an exploration of the monastery’s rooms, such as the cloister, kitchen, and the museum of sacred art. The history of Mafalda of Portugal, who contributed to the establishment of the monument in the 13th century and later lived there as a nun, will also be discussed along with details of her marriage and beatification.
The tour continues through the historic center to the Chapel of Mercy, constructed in 1612, known for its remarkable paintings and religious sculptures.
Next, we will visit the Calvario de Arouca, a granite mountain featuring stone crosses, where we will share its history tied to reflection and the procession of the Fogaréus that concludes at this site.
Our tour of Arouca will conclude at the Calvary after 2.5 hours.
