This guided tour of Arouca will take us to the most important churches of this town, exploring its history and connections with the monarchies of Spain and Portugal.

Description

The tour begins at the entrance of the monastery of Arouca, the most significant church in the area. Participants will learn about its history and enjoy some sweets. Inside the monastery, we will explore various rooms including the cloister, kitchen, and museum of sacred art. Its past will be detailed, including the story of Mafalda of Portugal, who married Henry I of Castile and significantly influenced the monument's founding in the 13th century. Her life, including her marriage and beatification, will also be discussed.

The guided tour of Arouca includes a walk through the historic centre to the Chapel of Mercy, built in 1612. This small church is notable for its high-quality paintings and religious sculptures.

Next, the tour proceeds to the Calvario de Arouca, a granite mountain featuring stone crosses. The significance of this site dedicated to reflection and contemplation will be explained, along with information on the popular procession of the Fogaréus that culminates here.

The tour will conclude after a duration of 2.5 hours at the Calvary.
