This guided tour of Arouca will take us to the most important churches of this town, discovering its history and connections with the monarchies of Spain and Portugal.
Description
At the chosen time, we'll meet at the entrance of the monastery of Arouca, the most significant church in the town. We will learn about its history and explore its features.
We will sample some sweets and enter the monastery to see rooms like the cloister, kitchen, and museum of sacred art. Our tour will cover the historical significance, including the contributions of Mafalda of Portugal, who was instrumental in the monument's founding in the 13th century and lived there as a nun.
The guided tour of Arouca continues with a walk through the historic center to reach the Chapel of Mercy, built in 1612, notable for its paintings and religious sculptures.
Next, we will visit the Calvario de Arouca, a granite mountain featuring stone crosses, where we will discuss its history and the procession of the Fogaréus, which takes place on this hill.
The tour of Arouca lasts 2.5 hours, concluding at the Calvary.
