Guided Tour of Assisi
St. Francis of Assisi's hometown serves as a significant site of pilgrimage, captivating both the devout and the curious alike. Over the course of 2 to 3 hours, we will meander through the charming city, delving into the life and impact of the founder of the Franciscan order and the Order of Saint Clare.
Our journey will commence in the Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, the starting point for our Assisi guided tour. Here, we will gather to gain insights into the life of Saint Clare, whose remains rest within this historic space.
Next, we will visit the Chiesa Nuova, built over the site of St. Francis's family home. Although the original residence has been transformed into a church, the ancient three portals that once provided access to the house and the working area of St. Francis remain intact.
Continuing our exploration, we will find ourselves at the Temple of Minerva, situated in the heart of Piazza del Comune. This temple, dating back to the first century BC, originally honored the goddess of war before being converted into a church many years later, similar to the Pantheon in Rome.
After our visit to the temple, we will proceed to two of the most significant sites: the Upper Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and the Lower Basilica of St. Francis. We will allocate approximately 30 minutes to each basilica, allowing time to appreciate the intricate details that contribute to this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Upper Basilica will impress you with its airy brightness and spaciousness, contrasting with the more intimate and subdued atmosphere of the Lower Basilica. We’ll take the opportunity to admire its numerous chapels and the crypt where the relics of St. Francis lie.
Our tour will conclude outside the Lower Basilica of St. Francis, having explored the key highlights of this iconic city.
