On this walking tour of Astorga, we'll explore the city's history, architecture, and Roman heritage.
Tour Details
At the scheduled time, we'll meet in front of the Episcopal Palace in the Plaza Eduardo de Castro. The tour will begin with a stroll through the historic centre of Astorga, discussing the Maragatería region and its famous mule drivers, as well as the city's connection to chocolate.
During our walk, we'll view two murals by local artist Da2.0. Next, we'll proceed to Plaza de Santocildes to learn about Cocido Maragato, a local stew, before heading to Plaza Mayor to explore the Baroque façade of the Town Hall and possibly hear the bell chimes of Juan Zancuda and Colasa.
We'll continue along the ancient walls, visiting hidden gems like the Sanctuary of Fátima, the Synagogue Garden, and the well-preserved Domus del Oso y los Pájaros, while discussing iconic festivals such as the patron saint celebrations and the Astures y Romanos re-enactment.
Next, we'll enter the Episcopal Palace, designed by Antoni Gaudí, exploring three floors from the main level to the basement. The tour will conclude at the Astorga Cathedral, where we will admire the chapels, the choir, and the main altarpiece by Gaspar Becerra.
The entire tour lasts a total of 3 hours, ending at the Plaza de la Catedral.
