Do you want to go from being a tourist to a scientist? On this marine research tour, we'll help biologists collect data on the cetaceans of Bahía Solano, in the Colombian Pacific!
Marine Research Tour in Bahía Solano
At the indicated time, we'll meet on Carrera 2 in Bahía Solano, in the tourist area of Ciudad Mutis. Here, we'll attend a brief talk on biology, where we'll learn about the main methodologies of cetacean research.
After this introduction, if the tide is high, we'll walk to the beach of Ciudad Mutis to embark. If the tide is low, we'll take a tuk-tuk or minibus to the dock of Bahía Solano, from where we'll start sailing.
On this trip, we'll try to spot humpback whales and other marine animals that inhabit these waters of the Colombian Pacific. As we sail, we'll assist the marine biologists accompanying us on the boat.
We'll look for different groups of cetaceans to monitor their behavior and take ecological, acoustic, genetic, and photo-identification data. We will also use a hydrophone to listen to the sounds of the whales underwater.
During the tour, we'll have a snack on board, which will include lemonade or iced tea and a cheese bread or croissant.
After 5.5-6.5 hours of spotting cetaceans and researching, we'll sail back to the starting point. The total duration of the activity will be approximately 7 hours, depending on the tides.
Whale watching
The coast of Bahía Solano is one of the best places in the Colombian Pacific to see humpback whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans. However, animal sightings can vary based on factors such as weather and breeding seasons.
