Whale Watching in Bahía Solano
When you make your reservation, you can choose one of the following options. In both options, we'll meet at Carrera 2 in Bahía Solano, in the tourist area of Ciudad Mutis, at the indicated time.
5-hour tour
After a brief introductory talk about humpback whales at the meeting point, we'll walk to the beach of Ciudad Mutis to embark. If low tide occurs, we'll travel by tuk-tuk or minibus to the dock of Bahía Solano.
During the journey through the Colombian Pacific waters, we'll learn about these cetaceans. If conditions are favorable, we'll use a hydrophone to listen to whales' sounds underwater and try to spot other animals such as dolphins, turtles, sailfish, sharks, or seabirds.
While sailing, we'll have a snack that consists of lemonade or iced tea and a cheese bread or croissant. After 3-4 hours of whale watching, we'll sail back to the starting point. The total duration of the activity will be between 4 and 5 hours.
8-hour tour
If you choose this option, after the 5-hour tour, we'll continue to Playa Mecana. If the tide is high, we'll sail to the mouth of the Mecana River. This area features a mangrove forest that is home to numerous birds and plants. If low tide, we'll disembark on the beach and walk to the Mecana River.
The tour continues at the home of two natives of the Mecana community for a typical lunch, including freshly caught fish, patacones or yucca, rice, salad, and soup. After lunch, we'll rest on the riverbank and then go tubing on the Mecana River. Following tubing, we'll sail back to the starting point. The total duration will also depend on the tides.
Whale watching
The coast of Bahía Solano is one of the best places to see humpback whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans. However, animal sightings depend on various factors like weather and the breeding seasons of different species.
Marine research tour
If you want to be a scientist for a day, you can opt for the marine research tour where you'll assist marine biologists in taking samples of the cetaceans of Bahía Solano.
