Prepare to be amazed by the breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity along our hiking route through the Chicamocha Canyon. Over the course of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), you'll witness a natural marvel up close.
Description
We'll meet at Barichara's main park and take a minibus to the village of Villanueva. The road trip lasts about two hours.
Upon arrival at Villanueva, we'll head towards Alto de Martha, the starting point for our hiking adventure through the Chicamocha Canyon.
The hike spans 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and passes through locations like Macaregua, Mesa de los Santos, and towns like Aratoca. We'll reach the Rancho Alegre viewpoint for a panoramic view of the canyon—a photo opportunity.
At this viewpoint, we'll take a short break to discuss how this landscape has evolved over centuries. This site was nominated for the Natural Wonders of the World list.
As we proceed, we'll immerse ourselves in the lush vegetation, observe the river, and look for birds and monkeys that inhabit this National Park. We'll also encounter cobblestone stretches designed by German engineer Geo von Lengerke during the colonial era.
Given the demanding nature of the 5-hour trek, we'll pause for a picnic including a sandwich, fruit, and water.
With renewed energy, we'll complete the final leg of our hike toward the town of Jordan, where our minibus will await. After 9 hours in total, we'll conclude back at our starting point in Barichara.
