Castano River Mines Private Trip

Pickup is at 10 am from your hotel in Barreal in a 4x4 jeep. The journey begins at an ancient gold mine north of Calingasta, where the extraction process will be explained.

We will ascend Timbirimbas hill in the 4x4, with the Andes visible in the background. The trip includes crossing the Castaño River in the vehicle.

On the opposite bank, we will visit the Castaño Nuevo mines, discovered in the late 19th century. While no longer operational, these mines were bustling in the 1950s and 1960s with over 800 houses built for miners and their families. We will also view the dike constructed over the Castaño River gorge for improved access.

After learning about the province of San Juan's mining history, a delicious picada de campo serves as a picnic lunch in nature. A short break for a light snack will occur midway through the trip. We will return to Barreal, arriving at 10 pm.
