The mines around the Castaño River are a key attraction in the Argentine department of Calingasta. This tour offers a private trip from Barreal to explore these landscapes.
Castano River Mines Private Trip
Pickup is at 10 am from your hotel in Barreal in a 4x4 jeep. The first stop is an old gold mine north of Calingasta, where the process of gold extraction will be explained.
The trip continues to ascend Timbirimbas hill in the 4x4 vehicle, with views of the Andes. Following this, we will cross the Castaño River in the 4x4.
On the opposite bank, we will visit the Castaño Nuevo mines, discovered in the late 19th century. Although currently inactive, these mines operated extensively in the 1950s and 1960s, with over 800 houses built for miners and their families. We will also see the dike built over the Castaño River gorge for better access.
After learning about the mining history of San Juan, we will enjoy a picada de campo - a picnic lunch in nature. A short break for a light snack will also be included. The return to your hotel in Barreal is expected by 10 pm.
