Private Excursion to the Castaño River Mines

This adventure begins at 10 am when you will be collected from your accommodation in Barreal, traveling in a 4x4 jeep towards an historic gold mine located north of Calingasta. The guide will provide insights into the intricate and perilous methods employed by miners to extract this highly sought-after metal.

As we continue our journey, we will navigate upwards to the Timbirimbas hill in the 4x4 vehicle. The majestic Andes mountains will serve as a stunning backdrop, their peaks rising dramatically against the sky. Following this, we will traverse the Castaño River in our jeep, evoking the spirit of true exploration.

Once we cross the river, our destination will be the Castaño Nuevo mines, where the discovery of gold and silver reserves took place in the latter half of the 19th century. Though now abandoned, these mines were once vibrant hubs during the 1950s and 1960s, supporting over 800 residences for miners and their families at the mountain's base. We will also observe the dam constructed over the Castaño River gorge, which improved accessibility to the site.

After delving into the mining legacy of San Juan province, we will take a moment to recharge with a delightful picada de campo - a traditional picnic lunch in a natural setting. Post-lunch, our return to the city will allow us to enjoy additional breathtaking Andean vistas along our route.

During the trip, we will pause briefly for a light snack outdoors. Ultimately, you will be returned to your hotel in Barreal, with an expected arrival around 10 pm.
