Beijing's Hutongs

Our free tour will begin at the designated time at Exit E of the Nan Luo Gu Xiang metro. From there, we'll walk to the historic Nanluoguxiang Hutong, an 800-meter-long (2,624-foot) alley dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, where the first hutongs and courtyard houses were established.

As we walk along this alley, we'll notice the mix of old and modern Beijing, featuring trendy bars, restaurants, hostels, themed stores, and street vendors. We'll also see the typical gray houses, accompanied by century-old trees that reflect Beijing's traditional architecture.

Next, we'll visit Mao'er Hutong, formerly known as Zitong Temple, a preserved area showcasing the essence of ancient Beijing streets. Here, we will learn about figures like Empress Wanrong and Feng Guozhang.

We'll stop at a narrow canal linking the Qianhai and Houhai lakes in the Shichahai area, where the serene terraces next to the water provide a picturesque view.

Later, we'll explore "Tobacco Pipe Lane," known for its historical connection to the tobacco industry, which led to the establishment of specialized stores enhancing the neighborhood's character.

We'll conclude our tour in front of the Beijing Drum and Bell Towers, after 2 hours.
