Full Itinerary of Your Visit

Located at 53-55 Crumlin Road, visitors can embark on a self-guided tour featuring audio and visual displays. The experience begins with an introduction video by Judge Mathews, providing insight into the prison’s history and nearby key buildings.

Visitors will explore a tunnel linking the gaol to the courthouse, guided by a hologram of Officer Roberts. In the Gaol Circle, the Governor highlights important areas and stories from the past. The C-Wing presents recreated cells and holographic inmates, with video interviews revealing life inside.

An optional visit to the condemned man's cell and hanging cells features a hologram illustrating the execution process. Outside, you’ll view the grave site of executed prisoners, the matron’s house, and a Westland Wessex helicopter.

History of the Crumlin Road Gaol

Opened in 1845, it was the most advanced prison in Northern Ireland, detaining Republicans and Loyalists during the Troubles. Built for 550 prisoners, it operated under "The Separate System" and witnessed 17 executions before closing as a working prison in 1996. It reopened as a tourist attraction in 2012.

Crumlin Road Gaol is open daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm, with final admission at 4 pm.
