History of the Crumlin Road Gaol

Opened in 1845, Crumlin Road Gaol was Northern Ireland’s most advanced prison, housing Republicans and Loyalists during the Troubles. Built to contain up to 550 prisoners, it operated under "The Separate System," intending full isolation. The prison held men, women, and children, witnessing 17 executions, the last in 1961. It closed in 1996, underwent renovations, and reopened in 2012 as a tourist attraction.
