Tour Overview
We'll convene at the scheduled time at the Saint Demetrius Orthodox Cathedral. Once our group is complete, we will commence this Berat guided tour, famously referred to as the ''. This moniker is derived from the stunning clusters of white-fronted homes overlooking the landscape.
After an initial briefing, we will board a vehicle to ascend towards Berat Castle, situated at an elevation of 200 metres (656 ft) above sea level. This impressive edifice once represented the ancient settlement of Berat, now transformed into a walled district.
Notably, it is one of the largest inhabited fortifications in the Balkans, with more than 500 residents living in its 120 medieval structures. As we navigate its charming streets, we'll delve into the rich history of this site, entering key locations like St. Mary of Blachernae Church, the church of St. Nicholas, the Acropolis, and the White and Red Mosques. We’ll also pause at the castle's viewing point to take in the breathtaking vistas.
Following our historical exploration, we will reboard our vehicle to discover the remaining two neighborhoods of Berat: the Gorica district and the Mangalem district. In Gorica, we'll cross the significant Gorica Bridge, pivotal to the city's growth, and admire its traditional architecture.
The journey continues as we traverse the suspension bridge to reach Mangalem. Renowned for its steep cobbled streets and its striking 18th and 19th-century vertical homes, this quarter epitomizes Berat. Here, we will wander through the medieval area, home to the Helveti Tekke and the King Mosque, where we will gain insights into the city’s Islamic heritage.
To conclude our adventure, we will stroll down the lively Republika Boulevard before wrapping up the guided tour, which will last approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, returning to our starting point.
