On this guided tour of Berat, we'll explore the castle and the oldest quarters of the city while learning about its history and cultural diversity.
Tour Details
We will meet at Saint Demetrius Orthodox Cathedral and begin the guided tour of Berat, also known as the 'city of a thousand windows'. This nickname is due to the cluster of white-fronted houses on the hillside.
After an introduction, we will drive to Berat Castle, located 200 meters (656 ft) above sea level. This site was once the ancient city of Berat and is now a walled quarter.
Berat Castle is known as one of the largest inhabited fortresses in the Balkans, housing over 500 residents in its 120 medieval houses. We will walk through its streets to learn about its history and visit key locations, such as St. Mary of Blachernae Church, St. Nicholas Church, the Acropolis, and the White and Red Mosques. A viewpoint at the castle will offer scenic views.
We will then continue to the Gorica district and the Mangalem district. In Gorica, we'll cross Gorica Bridge and view typical houses.
We will proceed to Mangalem via a suspension bridge, known for its steep cobbled streets and 18th and 19th-century vertical houses. Here, we will explore the medieval quarter, including the Helveti Tekke and the King Mosque, learning about the city’s Muslim heritage.
Finally, we will pass through Republika Boulevard, concluding the guided tour after 3 to 3.5 hours back at the starting point.
