Tour Details
On this tour of Berat, we will explore the castle and the oldest quarters of the city while learning about its history and cultural mix. We will meet at Saint Demetrius Orthodox Cathedral at the scheduled time and start the guided tour of Berat, known as the 'city of a thousand windows' due to its cluster of white-fronted houses.
Initially, we will drive to Berat Castle, situated 200 meters (656 ft) above sea level. This site was once the ancient city of Berat and is now a walled area. It is one of the largest inhabited fortresses in the Balkans, with over 500 residents in its 120 medieval houses. We will walk through the streets, visiting key locations such as St. Mary of Blachernae Church, the church of St. Nicholas, the Acropolis, and the White and Red Mosques. A stop at the castle's viewpoint will provide scenic views.
Following this exploration, we will visit the Gorica and Mangalem districts. In Gorica, we will cross Gorica Bridge, significant for the city's development. We will continue to Mangalem via the suspension bridge, known for its steep cobbled streets and long vertical houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. This area symbolizes Berat and includes visits to the Helveti Tekke and the King Mosque to learn about the city's Muslim history.
We will conclude the tour at Republika Boulevard, ending back at the starting point after 3 to 3.5 hours of activity.
