Tour Details
At the specified time, we'll meet at Saint Demetrius Orthodox Cathedral. After gathering, we'll start this guided tour of Berat, known as the 'city of a thousand windows' due to its cluster of white-fronted houses on the hill.
We'll then drive to Berat Castle, situated 200 metres (656 ft) above sea level. This structure was once the ancient city of Berat and now serves as a walled quarter.
It is one of the largest inhabited fortresses in the Balkans with over 500 residents in 120 medieval houses. We will walk through its streets, visiting key sites such as St. Mary of Blachernae Church, church of St. Nicholas, Acropolis, and the White and Red Mosques. A stop at the castle's viewpoint will provide scenic views.
The tour will continue to the Gorica district and the Mangalem district. In Gorica, we will cross Gorica Bridge and view its typical houses.
Crossing the suspension bridge leads us to Mangalem, known for its steep cobbled streets and 18th and 19th-century vertical houses. This quarter symbolizes Berat and includes the Helveti Tekke and the King Mosque, where we will learn about the city's Muslim heritage.
Finally, we'll walk along Berat's vibrant street, Republika Boulevard, concluding the guided tour after 3 to 3.5 hours back at the starting point.
