Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at Saint Demetrius Orthodox Cathedral. After gathering, we'll commence this guided tour of Berat, referred to as the 'city of a thousand windows' due to the cluster of white-fronted houses on the hill.
Following an introduction, we'll drive to Berat Castle, located 200 metres (656 ft) above sea level. Once the ancient city, it now serves as a walled quarter.
Berat Castle is noted as one of the largest inhabited fortresses in the Balkans with over 500 residents in its 120 medieval houses. We will explore its streets, visiting significant points like St. Mary of Blachernae Church, the church of St. Nicholas, the Acropolis, and the White and Red Mosques, concluding with a stop at the viewpoint for scenic views.
We'll then proceed to the Gorica district, crossing the Gorica Bridge, significant to the city's development, before continuing to the Mangalem district. This area features steep cobbled streets and vertical houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, symbolizing Berat. We will visit the Helveti Tekke and the King Mosque to understand more of the city's Muslim heritage.
We will pass through Republika Boulevard and conclude the guided tour after 3 to 3.5 hours back at the starting point.
