Tour of the Jewish Quarter of Besalú
At a chosen time, we will meet in front of the iconic Romanesque bridge over the river Fluvià to begin our tour of Besalú.
On the opposite bank lies the medieval historic center of the village. The tour includes visits to key locations, notably the Call, the old Jewish quarter, characterized by narrow streets filled with historical significance.
Following the 1492 expulsion of the Jewish population, we will explore the remaining legacy, which includes a visit to one of the four existing miqves in Europe. This ancient structure contains the Jewish bath hall where the ritual purification process is explained.
During our exploration of the Call, participants will learn about the customs, traditions, culture, and cuisine of the Besalú Jewish community, along with the history of other significant monuments, such as the monastery of San Pedro, founded in the 11th century by Count Bernardo I of Besalú.
After two hours of exploration, the tour concludes in the historic center of the town.
