Explore the Jewish quarter of Besalú and visit the ritual baths of a unique miqveh in Europe. On this tour, you'll learn about the history of one of the most beautiful medieval villages in the province of Girona.
Tour of the Jewish Quarter of Besalú
At the time of your choice, we'll meet up in front of the iconic Romanesque bridge that crosses the river Fluvià and set off on our tour of Besalú.
On the other bank awaits the medieval historic center of the village. We'll visit the most emblematic spots, among which the Call, the old Jewish quarter, stands out. This area features narrow and picturesque streets that reflect its rich history.
In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs expelled the Jewish population from the kingdoms; however, their legacy remains. We will visit one of the four remaining miqves in Europe, an ancient building housing the Jewish bath hall. Here, we'll learn about the ritual purification process.
During the tour of the Call, we'll discover the customs, traditions, culture, and cuisine of the Besalú Jewish community, along with the history of other significant monuments, including the monastery of San Pedro, established in the 11th century by Count Bernardo I of Besalú.
After two hours of exploring, our tour will conclude in the historic center of the town.
