Lucio Costa Model Neighbourhood Tour
We'll meet at 4 pm at the entrance to the SQS 308 neighbourhood to start this tour of an iconic area in Brazil's capital.
During the tour, we will admire the SQS (Super Quadra Sul) 308, a block model replicated throughout the city by urban planner Lucio Costa. This autonomous neighbourhood has essential amenities: parks, schools, kindergartens, shops, an artificial lake, and a church.
To design the model, Costa collaborated with landscape architect Burle Marx and architect Oscar Niemeyer. The church of Nossa Senhora de Fatima was designed by Niemeyer and features tiles created by painter Athos Bulcão.
We will continue our walk, observing the colourful buildings in the block. Special attention will be paid to the decorative element known as cobogos, which we will explore further during the tour.
Another architectural element we will frequently encounter are the pilotis, a column system developed by the modern architect Le Corbusier.
The tour will conclude in the 308th neighbourhood at 5 pm.
