Lucio Costa Model Neighbourhood Tour
We will meet at 4 pm at the entrance to the SQS 308 neighbourhood to start our tour of this iconic area of Brazil's capital.
During the tour, we will admire the SQS (Super Quadra Sul) 308, a model block that urban planner Lucio Costa replicated across the city, designed to be an autonomous and functional neighbourhood with essential amenities including parks, schools, kindergartens, shops, an artificial lake, and a church.
Costa collaborated with landscape architect Burle Marx and architect Oscar Niemeyer on the design. The church of Nossa Senhora de Fatima, designed by Niemeyer, features tiles by painter Athos Bulcão.
As we walk, we will observe the vibrant buildings of the block, paying special attention to the decorative elements known as cobogos. The tour will explain the purpose of these unique decorations.
We will also encounter pilotis, a system of columns developed by modern architecture innovator Le Corbusier.
The tour will conclude in the 308th neighbourhood at 5 pm.
