Buenos Aires Bookstores Tour
Jorge Luis Borges once said: "I always imagined that paradise would be some kind of library." Buenos Aires has the highest number of bookstores per capita in the world, with 370 shops. We will meet at 10 am next to the famous pyramid of Plaza de Mayo to start the tour.
The literary tour begins at La Librería de Ávila, located on Calle Adolfo Alsina in Monserrat. This store is the oldest bookshop in Buenos Aires, dating back to the late 18th century. It features a literary café in the basement that retains its traditional style.
Next, we will visit El Túnel, located on Avenida de Mayo, close to Café Tortoni, on the first floor of Palacio Vera, a beautifully decorated building in the Jugendstil style.
We will also stop in front of Edipo Libros on Avenida Corrientes, an emblematic store that survived the literary prohibitions enforced during the cultural genocide from 1976 to 1983 in Argentina.
At noon, the tour will conclude at El Ateneo Grand Splendid, recognized as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world by The Guardian. This store occupies much of an old cinema-theater from the early 20th century, serving as a temple of knowledge for book lovers worldwide.
