Buenos Aires Bookstores Tour
Jorge Luis Borges once said: "I always imagined that paradise would be some kind of library." Buenos Aires has the highest number of bookstores per capita in the world, with 370 shops. We will meet at 10 am next to the famous pyramid of Plaza de Mayo.
We'll begin our tour at La Librería de Ávila, located on Calle Adolfo Alsina in Monserrat. This store is the oldest bookshop in Buenos Aires, dating back to the late 18th century, and features a literary café in the basement.
Next, we'll visit El Túnel on Avenida de Mayo, near Café Tortoni, located on the first floor of Palacio Vera, a building with Jugendstil design.
We'll then proceed to Edipo Libros on Avenida Corrientes, an emblematic store that endured the literary prohibitions during the cultural genocide of 1976-1983 in Argentina.
At noon, we will conclude the tour at El Ateneo Grand Splendid, regarded as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. This store occupies an old cinema-theater from the early 20th century, which serves as a significant location for book lovers.
