Discover one of Ethiopia's most famous attractions with this three-day tour of the Lalibela Rock Churches.
Description
Day 1
On the first day, pick-up will be from Lalibela Airport to your hotel in Lalibela. After check-in, the tour begins with visiting the famous UNESCO-protected rock-hewn churches. First is Bet Medhane Alem, a large underground church carved from a monolith. The history of these 11 Ethiopian Orthodox churches will be shared, dating from the 11th to 13th centuries during the Zagwe Dynasty.
The Church of Biete Maryam will be next, known for its frescoes, followed by Bet Golgotha and Bet Danaghel. The day concludes with a return to the hotel in Lalibela.
Day 2
The second day starts early with a visit to one of Lalibela's famous churches for a religious ceremony, ongoing for about 900 years. A hearty breakfast follows, before visiting Bet Yemrehanna Kristo, significant as a pilgrimage center but not rock-hewn like the others.
After lunch, continue exploring Lalibela with visits to Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Abba Libanos, known for its attachment to rock, and Biete Amanuel, believed to have served as a royal chapel. The day ends with a return to the hotel.
Day 3
After breakfast, the remainder of the day is at leisure. At the agreed time, a return transfer to the airport will conclude the tour.
