Day Trip Details
At 6:30 AM, we will depart from Cairo to Alexandria, the key Mediterranean city in Egypt.
The tour starts at the Qaitibay Citadel, a defensive complex built in the 15th century by Sultan Qaitibay, where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. The lighthouse was destroyed by earthquakes, and its remains were used for the citadel's construction.
Next, we visit the Kom el Shoqafa Catacombs, showcasing the fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman culture through relief artwork. We will explore its three levels consisting of passages, tunnels, and galleries with tombs. Nearby, we will find Pompey's Pillar, formerly associated with the temple of the Greco-Egyptian God Serapis.
After lunch in central Alexandria, featuring fish and seafood rice, we will visit The New Alexandria Library. This building, honoring the ancient library from the 3rd century BC, houses numerous papyrus scrolls and was reinaugurated in 2002, becoming an important cultural site in the Eastern Mediterranean.
We will return to Cairo after 12 hours.
The New Alexandria Library
Note that the New Alexandria Library is closed on Fridays and open on Saturdays only from 10 AM to 2 PM. If you visit on these days, we will go to the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque and Ledge instead.
