Excursion to Alexandria
At 6:30 AM, we will depart from Cairo towards Alexandria, Egypt's most significant Mediterranean city.
The tour begins at the Qaitibay Citadel, a defensive complex built in the 15th century by Sultan Qaitibay, where the Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. This lighthouse was destroyed by earthquakes, and its ruins were used for the citadel's construction.
Next, we will visit the Kom el Shoqafa Catacombs, showcasing the blend of Egyptian and Greco-Roman cultures through relief artwork. The catacombs feature three levels, including passages, tunnels, and galleries with tombs. Nearby is Pompey's Pillar, previously part of a temple dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian God Serapis.
Lunch will be served in central Alexandria, featuring a menu with fish and seafood rice. In the evening, we will visit The New Alexandria Library, dedicated to the ancient library from the 3rd century BC, which was destroyed. The current library, reopened in 2002, is a prominent cultural space in the Eastern Mediterranean.
We will return to Cairo hotels around 12 hours later.
The New Alexandria Library
Note that the New Alexandria Library is closed on Fridays and Saturdays. On these days, the tour will visit the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque and Ledge instead.
The official guided visit to the New Alexandria Library is available in English, French, and Arabic.
Children under 12 cannot visit the New Alexandria Library and may instead go to the Children's Museum.
