Kuntur Wasi Day Trip
We'll pick you up at the indicated time at your hotel in Cajamarca to start the excursion to Kuntur Wasi, located on La Copa hill in San Pablo province. We'll arrive there at around 10:45 am.
The name Kuntur Wasi is derived from Quechua, meaning "house of the condor." The site features stone sculptures depicting this animal and other supernatural beings.
Kuntur Wasi was a necropolis of the Chavín civilisation, excavated in 1989 by Japanese archaeologists led by Dr. Yoshio Onuki. Eight tombs were uncovered, revealing valuable items including crowns, masks, and jewelry. The gold found here represents the oldest in the Americas.
We'll visit the Museum of Kuntur Wasi, showcasing gold objects discovered during excavations, including the notable 14-sided crown crafted using the embossing technique.
The tour continues with a visit to the archaeological complex, where we will view the temple, tombs, and carved stone sculptures. After exploring Kuntur Wasi, we’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant in San Pablo before returning to Cajamarca.
We will arrive at your hotel approximately 8 hours later.
