Kuntur Wasi Day Trip
We'll pick you up at the indicated time at your hotel in Cajamarca to start this excursion to Kuntur Wasi, an archaeological complex located on the La Copa hill, in the province of San Pablo. We'll arrive there at around 10:45 am.
Kuntur Wasi is a Quechua term meaning "house of the condor." This name comes from stone sculptures depicting the condor and other supernatural beings found on-site. Kuntur Wasi was a necropolis of the Chavín civilisation , excavated in 1989 by Japanese archaeologists under Dr. Yoshio Onuki. Valuable objects including crowns, masks, and jewellery were discovered in its eight tombs, with the gold found being the oldest in the Americas.
We'll visit the Museum of Kuntur Wasi, which contains gold objects from the excavations, including the notable 14-sided crown made with the embossing technique. Our tour will continue to the archaeological complex, where we'll see the temple, the tombs, and the carved stone sculptures. After visiting Kuntur Wasi, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant in San Pablo before returning to Cajamarca.
We will arrive at your hotels about 8 hours later.
