Excursion to Lake Sausacocha & Wiracochapampa
Your adventure begins with a 5 am pickup at your accommodation in Cajamarca. We will embark on a three-hour drive across the northern Peruvian plains, making our way to the town of Cajabamba, where you'll have some time to enjoy breakfast at your own pace. Following this break, we will continue toward Lake Sausacocha.
Upon reaching the lake, our exploration will start at this essential wetland area, framed by gentle hills. The name Sausacocha derives from the Inca phrase "sawsaqucha," which translates to "the lagoon that never dries up."
You will then have an hour and a half break to have lunch. Feel free to wander around the lagoon or take a scenic boat ride during this time. Afterwards, we will proceed to the archaeological site of Wiracochapampa, where we will delve into its intriguing legends.
This archaeological complex was constructed by the Wari, an ancient Andean civilization that thrived across much of Peru, often initially mistaken for Inca architecture. Here, you will observe their distinctive trapezoidal structures, with impressive walls soaring up to 20 meters high. As we walk, take a moment to appreciate the well-designed squares and courtyards that characterize the site.
Following the tour, we will journey back to Cajamarca, ensuring your return to the hotel by approximately 9:30 pm.
