Cartagena de Indias African Culture

At the appointed time we'll meet at the Camellón de los Mártires, also known as the Plaza of Peace. From here we'll begin our tour of Cartagena de Indias to learn about the legacy of African culture in the city.

First, we'll go to the Plaza de la Proclamación, where we'll see how the African communities of Cartagena developed their own culture. We'll then walk through other parts of the old town, like the Portal de las Reinas and the Plaza de la Marina, learning about illustrious Afro-Caribbean characters.

Next, we'll visit the San Pedro Claver Square and Customs House Square to learn about the differences between salsa and champeta dances. Following this, there will be a workshop on African turbans, allowing you to take home your creation.

After the workshop, we'll try some typical Afro-Caribbean sweets accompanied by coconut water. We'll then attend a dance class to learn the steps of the champeta.

This three-hour tour concludes in the historic centre of the city.
