Visit the first free African town in the Americas on this day trip to San Basilio de Palenque from Cartagena and immerse yourself in its fascinating culture.

San Basilio de Palenque Day Trip

Pick up is scheduled around 9 am from your hotel in Cartagena de Indias. The journey to San Basilio de Palenque takes approximately one hour, leading you to a village with over 300 years of history. Recognized as the first free African town in the Americas, it is now a cultural heritage site where the creole language and African culture are preserved. You will explore the town's streets and learn about its origins.

The tour includes views of colourful houses and unique traditions in music, dance, and medicine. A highlight is the sight of the “Palenqueras”, women in traditional dress selling tropical fruits, representing the cultural essence of San Basilio de Palenque.

The tour includes a delicious typical lunch featuring regional delicacies. Following the tour, you will return to Cartagena, arriving at around 3 pm.

Hotel pick up

This tour offers pick up from hotels in the Bocagrande area and the historical centre of Cartagena. If your accommodation is outside these locations, you will need to reach the meeting point at the entrance of the Éxito San Diego supermarket.
