Constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Spanish military alongside enslaved Africans, the San Felipe de Barajas castle served as a formidable defense against notorious threats, including Pointis, a French pirate, and English officer Edward Vernon. Are you familiar with Blas de Lezo? We will delve into his fascinating story and much more during our exploration.
As we stroll along the fortifications, we'll encounter the cannons that once made up part of the 63 mounted for the defense of Cartagena de Indias. The tour will also take us through the galleries, guardhouses, and reservoirs, culminating in an intriguing exploration of the tunnels that served as escape routes for up to 300 individuals!
Throughout the journey, we'll uncover various secrets of the castle's construction, including some unusual materials that were utilized in its building.
Following our time at the castle, we will board a minibus and head to the Cerro de la Popa, the highest elevation in Cartagena.
