On this guided tour of the castle San Felipe de Barajas, we will explore its historical significance as a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
Tour Details
We will meet at the Camellón de los Mártires at the time indicated and proceed to the San Felipe de Barajas castle. This extensive fort is located on San Lázaro hill and was constructed during the XVI and XVII centuries by Spanish military and African slaves to defend against pirate and military attacks, notably from Pointis and Edward Vernon. We will discuss Blas de Lezo and other historical figures.
As we walk along the fortress walls, we will view the remaining cannons, explore the galleries, guardhouses, and reservoirs, and traverse the tunnels that could accommodate 300 people during sieges.
Insights into the construction secrets of the castle, including unusual materials, will be shared during the tour.
Following our visit to the castle, we will take a minibus to Cerro de la Popa, the highest point in Cartagena. Here, we will learn about local myths and legends while visiting the convent. The panoramic viewpoint offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, the island of Tierra Bomba, and the bays of Cartagena.
The activity will conclude after a 3-hour tour.
