On this guided tour of the castle San Felipe de Barajas, we will explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and its historical significance.
Tour Details
We will meet at the Camellón de los Mártires at the specified time and proceed to the San Felipe de Barajas castle. This massive Cartagena fort, located on San Lázaro hill, was constructed in the XVI and XVII centuries by the Spanish military and African slaves as a defense against attacks from French pirate Pointis and English officer Edward Vernon.
During the tour, we will walk along the fortress walls to see the cannons that were part of the original 63 defending Cartagena de Indias. We will also explore the galleries, guardhouses, reservoirs, and tunnels that provided strategic protection, capable of housing 300 individuals.
The tour will reveal secrets surrounding the castle's construction, including the use of human and animal blood in certain areas.
Following our visit to the castle, we will take a minibus to the Cerro de la Popa, the highest point in Cartagena, rich in myths and legends. At the convent, we will enjoy the panoramic viewpoint, offering a view of the Caribbean Sea, the island of Tierra Bomba, and the bays of Cartagena.
The tour lasts for approximately 3 hours.
