Chankillo & Carob Tree Forest Tour
Our adventure begins with a pick-up at your hotel in Casma at 9 am, followed by a short trip of just thirty minutes to reach the archaeological site of Chankillo.
Designated as a World Heritage Site in July 2021, Chankillo is renowned as the oldest astronomical complex in the Americas, with origins tracing back to between 257 and 201 BC. During our exploration, we will uncover intriguing insights about how the ancient inhabitants viewed their cosmos.
Next, we will marvel at the ancient fortified temple, stretching 300 meters in length and showcasing multiple concentric walls that rise over 5 meters high. The significance of these impressive structures is often debated, and throughout the tour, we will discuss the leading theory which suggests that remnants found nearby indicate the staging of simulated battles in this ancient location.
Additionally, we will encounter numerous carob tree trunks repurposed as lintels within the fortress. After gaining an understanding of their architectural significance, we will stroll through the carob tree forest located at the archaeological site. This special ecological area offers an opportunity to learn about the health benefits and qualities of the carob tree.
Following our visit to the carob forest, we will make our way back to your hotel in Casma, with an expected return time between 11 and 11:30 am.
