Calanques National Park Hike
At the designated meeting time, we will gather at Avenue des Calanques in Cassis. From this point, we will embark on a nature trek through the eastern section of Calanques National Park.
You will be captivated by the area's heavenly coves and limestone cliffs, which have evolved over a span of approximately 120 million years.
A calanque refers to an ancient valley carved by a river, which was subsequently submerged by the sea as water levels rose 12,000 years ago. This idyllic location is encircled by towering rock formations and leaves visitors in awe.
Throughout the journey, we will navigate the coastline of Cassis, stopping at the first calanque, known as Port-Miou. Resembling a fjord, this 1.5-kilometre (mile-long) calanque extends into the land. We will visit the marina, discuss an ancient quarry, and explore the significance of the underground river flowing through this region.
As we continue along the coast, we will arrive at Port-Pin before ascending to the Calanque d'En-Vau viewpoint. Perched at nearly 120 metres (400 feet) in elevation, this viewpoint offers breathtaking vistas of Calanques National Park.
Following our exploration, which includes multiple stops and a chance to refresh with a swim, we will conclude our hiking adventure back at the original meeting point.
