On this free tour of Catania, we'll discover the history of a city that had to rise from the ashes more than seven times like a phoenix.

Tour Details

At the appointed time, we'll meet in the Piazza Università for this free tour of Catania, a city affected by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and war. We will explore the origins of this Sicilian town while admiring the Roman amphitheatre, a 2nd-century construction built with basaltic stone from the Etna volcano. The tour will cover the founding of the Greek town of Katane and the timeline leading to the fall of the Roman Empire.

We will discuss the life of composer Vincenzo Bellini and the legend of Saint Agatha, the city's patron saint. The tour will include a visit to via Crociferi, noted for its 18th-century buildings and churches, including San Giuliano and San Camillo, and we will address the features of Sicilian Baroque. Catania is recognized as a World Heritage Site and is one of the late baroque cities of Val di Noto.

After 2 hours, we'll conclude the free tour of Catania at the meeting point.
