Description
We will convene at the designated time in front of the Church of San Nicolò, marking the beginning of our journey focused on Mount Etna. Throughout this tour, we will reflect on the eruptions and their effects on Catania, all while visiting a variety of fascinating locations.
Our first stop will be the grounds of the Benedictine monastery of Catania. This historical landmark was among the first to suffer damage from the eruption of 1669, where significant remnants, including towering lava blocks, are still observable today.
Next, we will descend towards the Baths of the Rotonda and the Roman theatre, delving into the fascinating history of the Amenano River. This riverbed primarily remains below ground nowadays, and we’ll explain the reasons behind this phenomenon!
Continuing our journey, we will proceed to Castello Ursino, a fortress that experienced the full impact of lava flows. Here, we’ll uncover how this remarkable natural event influenced the urban architecture.
For those opting for the morning tour, we will trace the path of the solidified lava flow to the A putia dell'Ostello hostel, where a hidden gem in its cozy bar will be revealed. If you choose the afternoon route, we will visit the Pozo di Gammazita, tied to the 1669 eruption, complete with an intriguing legend that we will share during the excursion.
This insightful exploration of the Etna eruption in Catania will conclude at the hostel’s bar, wrapping up our experience after 2 hours.
