Mount Etna Eruption Historic Tour

Would you like to discover the power of Sicily's most famous volcano? On this tour about the eruption of Etna in Catania, we will see how this natural phenomenon changed the landscape of the city.

Description

At the indicated time we will meet in front of the Church of San Nicolò to start a tour all about Mount Etna. We will discuss its eruptions and the repercussions they had on Catania while visiting significant locations.

We will enter the courtyard of the Benedictine monastery of Catania, initially damaged by the eruption of 1669, showcasing large blocks of lava.

Next, we will head toward the Baths of the Rotonda and the Roman theatre while explaining the history of the Amenano River, which now runs largely underground.

From there, we will proceed to Castello Ursino, a fortress almost enveloped by lava, illustrating the impact of this natural event on the city's architecture.

If you take the morning tour, we will follow the solidified lava flow to the A putia dell'Ostello hostel, revealing a hidden jewel at its bar. In the afternoon tour, we will visit Pozo di Gammazita, associated with the 1669 eruption and a notable legend.

The tour concludes at the bar of the hostel after 2 hours.
