Want to discover what is underground Catania? On this tour, we'll head under the city in search of hidden churches, tunnels, and mysterious passageways.
Tour Details
We'll meet at the designated time at Piazza Stesicoro to begin to discover underground Catania. Throughout the tour, we will visit 3 historical sites hidden under the earth.
Our first stop will be the Roman Amphitheatre, an important monument that is part of our underground tour of the historic centre. The site, dating back to the 2nd century AD, is now located within the Greco-Roman archaeological park of Catania.
Next, we'll visit the Sant'Eupilo Crypt, originally a Roman tomb from the imperial era, now found under the ruins of a church destroyed in World War II bombings. We will learn about the history of the saint associated with this crypt, one of the first martyrs in Catania.
Our final stop will be the San Giuliano Crypt, located under a church with the same name, where we will learn about its history and function.
To conclude, we will stop by a kiosk for snacks and a drink. The tour ends at Piazza Università after a total of 2.5 hours.
