Want to discover what is underground Catania? On this tour, we'll head under the city in search of hidden churches, tunnels, and mysterious passageways.
Tour Details
We'll meet at the designated time at Piazza Stesicoro to begin to discover underground Catania. Throughout the tour, we'll walk around the city and visit 3 historical sites hidden under the earth.
Our first stop will be the Roman Amphitheatre, an important monument which, though visible above ground, forms part of our underground tour of the historic centre. The site, which dates back to the 2nd century AD, is part of the Greco-Roman archaeological park of Catania.
Afterwards, we'll visit the Sant'Eupilo Crypt, originally a Roman tomb from the imperial era now found under the ruins of a church destroyed in World War II bombings. During our visit, we'll learn about the history of the saint who gave this crypt its name.
We'll then head to the San Giuliano Crypt, located under a church with the same name, and learn about its history and past function.
To conclude, we'll stop by a kiosk for some snacks and a drink. The tour will end at Piazza Universià after a total of 2.5 hours.
Additional Info
If any of the mentioned sites are inaccessible, the itinerary will be adjusted to include other underground sites of similar importance.
