Join us on a day trip to Xunantunich and explore the remnants of the Mayan civilization.
Description
We will pick you up from your hotel in San Ignacio at 8 am for a scenic 15-minute drive to Xunantunich, an ancient Mayan city known as “Stone Woman.” A 15-minute ferry ride along the river offers views of local fauna like iguanas and bats.
Using a hand-cranked ferry, we'll cross the Mopán River, followed by a 1-mile drive to our starting point. A guide will share insights into Mayan archaeology as we walk through the understory, leading us to the prominent structure of “El Castillo,” which stands approximately 130 feet tall (39 meters) and is the second tallest man-made structure in Belize. Participants can climb to the top for a 360-degree view.
After touring the Central Plaza, we will explore the Ancient Mayan Ball Court, the venue for Pok-A-Tok, as well as residential areas and the Astronomical Observatory, used for agricultural noting.
At the conclusion of the tour, we will drive back to San Ignacio, with drop-off scheduled between 12:30 pm and 1 pm at your hotel or the office.
