Join us for a day trip to Xunantunich, an ancient Mayan city. Experience the remains of homes and temples from this pre-Columbian culture.

Description

We will pick you up from your hotel in San Ignacio at 8 am. A scenic 15-minute drive will take us to Xunantunich, whose name means “Stone Woman.” After a 15-minute ferry ride along the river, we will cross the Mopán River using a hand-cranked ferry.

Once across, we will drive 1 mile to start our adventure. Our guide will share his extensive knowledge of Mayan archaeology as we walk through the understory. As we approach the city, you will see the towering structure of “El Castillo,” which stands approximately 130 feet tall (39 meters), making it the second tallest man-made structure in Belize. You will have the opportunity to climb to the top for a 360-degree view.

After exploring the Central Plaza, we will visit the Ancient Mayan Ball Court, the residential areas, and the Astronomical Observatory, used for observing celestial bodies to determine agricultural cycles.

At the end of the tour, we will return to San Ignacio and drop you off at the office or your hotel between 12:30 pm and 1 pm.
