Spending a few days in Chetumal? Don't miss this day trip to Calakmul, where we'll visit one of the most important ancient Maya cities in Mexico.
Day Trip Details
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at your hotel in Chetumal to depart for the archaeological site of Calakmul, meaning "Snake Kingdom."
After approximately 3.5 hours through jungle landscapes, we will reach the entrance of this natural site. Before the Calakmul ruins, we will stop for a 1-hour walk in the tropical jungle, where you may see local fauna, such as howler monkeys and toucans.
Following the jungle exploration, we will proceed to the expansive archaeological site of Calakmul, covering 70 square kilometers with over 6,000 buried structures. This site offers crucial insights into both archaeology and biological diversity within the Campeche jungle.
You will visit key structures like the Great Plaza, the Ball Court, and the Acropolis, as well as learn about the history and traditions of the Maya people through their carved stone stelai.
After spending 4 hours on-site, we will begin the return journey, arriving at your hotel after a total of 13 hours.
