Spending a few days in Chetumal? Don't miss this day trip to Calakmul, where we'll visit one of the most important ancient Maya cities in Mexico.
Day Trip Details
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at your hotel in Chetumal to set off to the archaeological site of Calakmul. The name means "Snake Kingdom."
For approximately 3.5 hours, we'll pass through jungle landscapes until we reach the entrance of this natural site. Before reaching the Calakmul ruins, we'll stop to stroll along a path in the tropical jungle for 1 hour. Wildlife may include howler monkeys and toucans.
After exploring the jungle, we'll continue toward the archeological site of Calakmul. This ancient Mayan city spans 70 square kilometers (27 square miles) and contains more than 6,000 buried structures. It is also noted for its biological diversity within the Campeche jungle.
As we visit the main structures, including the Great Plaza, the Ball Court, and the Acropolis, you will learn about the history and traditions of the Maya people through their carved stone stelai.
After exploring for 4 hours, we will begin our return journey, arriving at your hotel after approximately 13 hours.
