Considering a few days in Chetumal? Make sure to include a day trip to Calakmul, where you will explore one of the most significant ancient Maya cities in Mexico.

Trip Overview

At the agreed time, we will gather at your accommodation in Chetumal and embark on our journey to the Calakmul archaeological site, recognized as one of the essential Maya remnants in Mexico. Interestingly, its name translates to "Snake Kingdom".

During the next 3.5 hours, we'll traverse through lush jungle scenery until we arrive at the entrance of this spectacular natural site. Before reaching the Calakmul ruins, we will pause for an hour to wander along a tropical jungle path. With a bit of luck, you may spot local wildlife such as howler monkeys and toucans.

Once we finish our jungle stroll, we'll proceed toward the awe-inspiring Calakmul archaeological site. As you delve into this ancient Mayan city, prepare to be astonished by its extensive 70 square kilometers (27 square miles) and over 6,000 hidden structures. Calakmul is not only a vital archaeological locale but also boasts significant biological diversity nestled in the heart of the Campeche jungle.

You will feel like an authentic explorer as we check out the site's prominent structures, including the Great Plaza, the Ball Court, and the Acropolis. Together, we will uncover the history and customs of the Maya people through their fascinating carved stone stelai.

After spending 4 hours at this remarkable site, we will commence our return journey, arriving back at your hotel approximately after 13 hours.
