Depart Cape Town and head eastwards along the N2 to the quaint fishing town of Gansbaai, the starting point of your thrilling marine safari experience. This popular tourist destination lies within the Overberg District Municipality of the Western Cape, about a two-hour drive south-east of Cape Town. Gansbaai is the “Great White Shark Capital of the World”, well known for its dense population of Great White sharks and also as a whale-watching hotspot. Not only is this place fantastic for marine wildlife viewing, but it’s also a stunning naturally beautiful area with its ruggedness and unspoiled charm.
On a two-hour cruise from Gansbaai, you will explore the waters between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. This shallow channel between the two islands—aptly named Shark Alley—is a popular feeding ground for Great White sharks and a familiar shark cage diving location. After exploring ‘Shark Alley’ you travel to more hotspots to see whales, African penguins and other seabirds around Dyer Island and Geyser Rock.
Dyer Island, situated 8.5km from Kleinbaai harbour near Gansbaai, is a protected bird sanctuary and hosts a number of endangered species such as the African penguin, African Black Oystercatchers, Cape Cormorants and many more.
