Description
At the agreed time, we'll meet at the Agência Banco de Portugal in Largo da Portagem to start this 2-hour and 45-minute free tour of Coimbra.
First, we'll head to the Praça do Comércio, home to the Churches of St. Bartholomew and St. James.
Then, we'll meander through the narrow streets of Coimbra's center and pass by the Monastery of Santa Cruz, which has a significant theological, cultural, and scientific legacy. This monastery was once a school of importance, where one of the most revered saints in Christianity studied.
Next, we'll arrive at Quebras Costas, a lively square filled with the soulful sounds of Coimbra's Fado during festivals. You'll also find two intriguing monuments there.
Our tour will then continue to the Torre do Anto, providing views of the city's left side. We'll see the Sé-Velha, the only Romanesque-style cathedral in Portugal from the Christian Reconquista era.
Lastly, we'll stop at the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290, one of Europe's oldest universities, concluding our tour with a visit to the botanical garden of the University—second oldest in Portugal.
