Coimbra was first named by the Romans as Eminius, later outgrowing and even assuming the name of the nearby roman city of Conimbriga (whose ruins can be visited today). Coimbra is the home to the country’s oldest and most prestigious university, founded in 1290 by the Poet King Dinis, which makes it also one of the oldest in the World. In recent history the students of this university had a central part in the fight against the fascist dictatorship of Salazar, by defending the values of Freedom and Democracy relentlessly. One of the oldest cities in Portugal, it was even the capital of the country before Lisbon, until 1255.

Discover the university tradition that inspired Harry Potter's robes and partly Hogwarts. Admire its steeply stacked historic center dates to Moorish times, with its dark cobbled lanes and monumental cathedral. “Coimbra is a lesson”, says the famous Fado song that echoes through the eras. You will find out the origins of this Portuguese famous traditional music, all in the city where the founder of the Kingdom of Portugal was born.
