Discover the incredible "Shining City", the archaeological ruins of a Medieval citadel constructed in the first half of the 10th century by Abd-ar-Rahman III, the first Umayyad Caliph of Cordoba.

Medina Azahara Guided Tour

At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Paseo de la Victoria, then travel by bus to Medina Azahara, located 8 kilometres (4.9 miles) from Cordoba. Abandoned and looted 80 years after construction, the former capital of al-Andalus was discovered at the end of the 19th century and spans 276 acres (112 hectares), making it one of the largest archaeological sites in Spain.

Upon arrival at the ruined palace-city, we'll visit the Medina Azahara Museum to view remains and learn more about the site through a collection of artifacts. After this, a shuttle bus will take us to the archaeological site for a guided tour. As we explore the 10% of the site that has been uncovered, our guide will share insights about the fortress, including its limestone walls with arabesque carvings and pools of mercury, highlighting the complex’s historical significance.

Experience the 10th-century lifestyle of the Caliph of Cordoba as we walk through the ancient fortified city, observing its mosques, towers, servants' quarters, bath complexes, and aristocratic residences. After the visit, we will return to the meeting point in Cordoba by bus, completing a total duration of 3.5 hours.
