On this beautiful hike up Mount Tlaloc, we'll reach the highest point of the Sierra de Río Frío and visit the highest archaeological site in Mesoamerica!
Hiking up Mount Tlaloc
At the designated time, we'll meet at the corner of Av. Vicente Suarez and Av. Michoacán. We'll travel in a minibus, passing through the towns of Texoco and San Pablo Ixayoc to the starting point of the Tlaloc hiking route. We’ll start walking uphill through a pine forest.
During the hike, we’ll discuss the flora and fauna of this natural environment. We’ll cross a canyon and reach the summit of Mount Tlaloc at an altitude of 13,517 feet (4,120 meters). Here, we will visit the highest archaeological site in Mesoamerica. This site was considered sacred by the Aztecs, and we will explore its significance related to the Aztec raingod Tlaloc and a curious astronomical phenomenon that occurs every February.
From the top, we’ll take a break to admire volcanoes Iztaccihuatl and La Malinche, and possibly Pico de Orizaba if the sky is clear. After this break, we’ll begin our descent.
Before returning to Mexico City, we’ll enjoy a delicious picnic lunch that includes a sandwich, fruit, peanuts, chocolate, water, and a cereal bar. After 2 hours of descent, we’ll return to the minibus for the trip back to Mexico City, arriving after approximately 14.5 hours.
