Handmade guitars, delicate gold and silver filigree jewellery, and vibrantly coloured textiles characterize the craftwork of Ecuador, which you can explore on this day trip to San Bartolomé, Chordeleg and Gualaceo from Cuenca.
Chordeleg & Gualaceo Day Trip
After being picked up from your hotel in Cuenca, your journey begins through the surrounding mountains. The first destination is San Bartolomé, a traditional town in the Andes, where you'll view the Santa Barbara River.
San Bartolomé is known for handcrafted guitars. You will visit a workshop and learn about the luthiers' craft in making these instruments.
Your next stop is Chordeleg, recognized for its ceramics and filigree jewellery made from silver and gold. Engage with local craftspeople as they demonstrate their intricate techniques in a workshop.
You will explore the Plaza Central in Chordeleg and visit various artisan stores around the square before proceeding to Gualaceo, noted for its textiles.
In Gualaceo, explore two traditional markets and admire the bright colours and intricate designs of the handwoven fabrics. Visit a textiles workshop to see the different looms used by artisans and learn about the pre-Hispanic Ikat weaving technique often applied to traditional ponchos.
After 4 hours of discovering the ancestral traditions of Azuay artisans, you will return to Cuenca and be dropped off at your original pickup location.
