Discover the Medieval Kingdom of Northumbria: explore the ruined castles, quaint villages and wild coastline of North-East England on this day trip from Edinburgh.
Holy Island & Alnwick Castle Day Trip
On the morning of your activity, after meeting in central Edinburgh, you'll board a luxury coach to head south into northeast England via a scenic coastal route with views of the rugged landscape.
Your first stop will be Holy Island, connected to the mainland village of Lindisfarne by a tidal causeway. The island has been a pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages. You will explore the ruins of the Priory, the Castle, and taste the famous mead brewed by monks.
Next, you will continue to Alnwick, where you'll have time to stroll around the town center or explore the 11th-century Alnwick Castle and its gardens, including the Grand Cascade. The grounds were used as a filming location in Harry Potter.
Afterward, you'll head back north, crossing the River Tweed into the historic town of Coldstream. If time permits, you'll stop at the well-preserved Flodden Field, the site of the battle in 1513 that resulted in the death of James IV, King of Scots.
At the end of the day, you'll return to Edinburgh by around 6:15 pm.
