Discover the Medieval Kingdom of Northumbria: explore the ruined castles, quaint villages, and wild coastline of North-East England on this day trip from Edinburgh.

Holy Island & Alnwick Castle Day Trip

Begin your day by meeting in central Edinburgh and boarding a luxury coach to travel south into northeast England. Your route includes scenic coastal views of the rugged landscape.

The first stop is Holy Island, with a history dating back to the 6th century, connected to Lindisfarne by a tidal causeway. Here, you can explore the ruins of the Priory, the ancient Castle, and sample traditional mead brewed by monks.

Next, head south to Alnwick, a historic market town featuring the 11th-century Alnwick Castle. You will have time to stroll around the town center or explore the castle complex and elegant gardens, including the Grand Cascade, which was a filming location for Harry Potter.

Afterward, you'll return north, crossing the River Tweed into Coldstream on the English-Scottish border. If time permits, a stop at Flodden Field, site of the 1513 battle, may be included.

You will return to Edinburgh around 6:15 pm.
