On this hiking route up the Tajogaite Volcano, we'll have the best views of the landscape formed in the 19th September 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption.

Tajogaite Volcano Hike

At the indicated time, we'll meet at the El Paso Tourist Information Office (CIT Insular) to start this hiking route around the Cumbre Vieja volcano. During this activity, we'll discuss the recent volcanic episodes on La Palma and the changes since the 2021 September eruption.

We'll take a taxi to Cumbre Vieja Natural Park and arrive at Llano del Jable, at 1200 metres (4000 feet) high. Along the way, we'll explain the formation process of La Palma and El Hierro, the youngest Canary Islands.

We'll begin a walk through the ash and lapilli, learning about the vegetation damage and regeneration initiatives involving Canary Pine, while discussing the worst affected towns.

After walking 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles), we'll reach approximately 300 metres (984 feet) from the crater of the newly formed Tajogaite Volcano. Here, we'll experience views of the lava flow that impacted the Aridane Valley and changed many lives.

We'll conclude by returning along the same route, totaling 5 kilometres (3 miles) over 3 hours of activity.

7-Kilometre Hike

For a more challenging option, consider the 7-kilometre (4.3-mile), medium-difficulty hike, taking us closer to the crater.

Upon arriving at Llano del Hable, we'll continue along the trail, then detour to an old area of fig, mulberry, and chestnut fields. We'll descend a steep path filled with pyroclasts, leading to the edge of the volcanic vents. You'll observe vibrant colours, fumaroles, and significant destruction.

We'll return to the starting point by bordering the eastern side of the volcanic cone, reaching our meeting point by vehicle after a total of 4 hours.

Difficulty Level

This activity is suitable for those in good physical condition or regular hikers. The route is 5 km (3 miles) over sandy terrains. Summer heat may increase difficulty.

Children may participate under parental responsibility, who should assess their ability. For children aged 3 to 5 years, a baby carrier is required.

Included

  • Transport by car
  • English–speaking guide
