Ria Formosa Birdwatching Tour
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the pier of Faro, specifically at the Passeio Abu Sào Ibn Harune. Here, we'll board a pontoon boat and sail towards the Ria Formosa, a natural paradise located in the Algarve.
During the cruise, we will discover why the Ria Formosa is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. Prepare your binoculars to observe numerous birds!
You will see aquatic birds such as white storks, little egrets, and spoonbills. In winter, more wading birds are visible, while smaller birds like curlews, plovers, and stonechats stay in the estuary year-round.
The tour will proceed next to several oyster and clam farms, where we will learn about the significance of shellfish fishing in southern Portugal. We will also see birds that feed on shellfish, such as oystercatchers and black-tailed godwits.
As we sail to the mouth of the estuary, we will stop to enjoy the views and continue observing the birdlife. This estuary is a breeding site for species like little terns and plovers, and in winter, flamingos can also be seen!
After a two-hour boat ride with birdwatching on the Ria Formosa, we will return to the pier in Faro, where the experience will end.
Birdwatching
The Ria Formosa is one of the best places in Portugal for birdwatching. However, animals are unpredictable, and the visibility of birds will depend on factors such as weather and breeding seasons.
