Enjoy birdwatching on the Ria Formosa on this boat trip from Faro. We'll see numerous species, such as the white stork, curlew, and oystercatcher!
Ria Formosa Birdwatching Tour
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the pier of Faro, specifically at the Passeio Abu Sào Ibn Harune. Here, we'll board a pontoon boat and set sail towards the Ria Formosa, a natural area in the Algarve.
During the cruise, we'll learn why the Ria Formosa is regarded as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. Prepare to observe a range of birds through your binoculars!
You'll see various aquatic birds including white storks, little egrets, and spoonbills. In winter, more wading birds are visible, while other smaller birds like curlews, plovers, and stonechats can be seen year-round.
The tour will proceed near several oyster and clam farms, where we'll learn about the significance of shellfish fishing in this southern region of Portugal. We will also spot birds that feed on shellfish, including oystercatchers and black-tailed godwits.
As we head toward the mouth of the estuary, we'll pause to enjoy views of this natural oasis and continue observing its birdlife. This estuary serves as a breeding ground for species like little terns and plovers, and in winter, even flamingos!
After a two-hour boat ride, we'll return to the pier in Faro, concluding the experience.
Birdwatching
The Ria Formosa is an ideal location in Portugal for birdwatching. However, animals are unpredictable, and the number of birds sighted may vary due to factors such as weather and breeding seasons.
