Ria Formosa Birdwatching Tour
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the pier of Faro, at Passeio Abu Sào Ibn Harune. Here, we'll board a pontoon boat and sail towards the Ria Formosa, a natural paradise in the Algarve.
During the cruise, we'll discover why the Ria Formosa is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. Bring your binoculars to observe numerous birds!
You'll see aquatic birds such as white storks, little egrets, and spoonbills. In winter, more wading birds are present; however, smaller birds like curlews, plovers, and stonechats remain year-round.
The tour will continue next to several oyster and clam farms, where we'll learn about the importance of shellfish fishing in this area. We'll also see birds that feed on shellfish, such as oystercatchers and black-tailed godwits.
As we sail to the mouth of the estuary, we'll stop to enjoy views of this natural oasis and continue observing the birdlife. This estuary is a breeding place for species like little terns and plovers, and in winter, even flamingos!
After a two-hour boat ride with birdwatching on the Ria Formosa, we'll return to the pier in Faro, where the experience will end.
Birdwatching
The Ria Formosa is one of the best places in Portugal for birdwatching. However, animal sightings can be unpredictable and depend on factors such as weather and breeding seasons.
