On this private tour of Ferrara, you'll visit its medieval alleys and Renaissance boulevards to discover its extensive history with a guide exclusively for you.
Tour Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Castello Estense to start a 2.5-hour private tour of Ferrara. The Estense Lordship ruled Ferrara for more than 300 years, and it has been a World Heritage Site since 1995. It is also recognized as the Italian capital of cycling.
The tour will begin in the courtyard of Castello Estense, a symbol of the city that was built as a fortress and later transformed into a ducal residence for the Estense family. You'll observe its terraces, balconies, and imposing towers.
We will proceed to Piazza Savonarola and Piazza Cattedrale, which features the grandiose façade of the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral and the Ducal Palace, now the Town Hall. Nearby, Loggia dei Merciai marks the historic business center of the Middle Ages.
We will walk through the medieval streets to Via delle Volte, learning about the significance of the Po River and its ancient ports. We will also explore the narrow streets of the Jewish ghetto, home to one of Italy's most flourishing Jewish communities.
Before reaching Corso Ercole I d'Este, we'll pass the Antica Enoteca Al Brindisi, the oldest tavern in the world, operational since before 1435. The visit concludes at the Palazzo dei Diamanti, a late 15th-century building.
